This print is beautiful. It's a commonly depicted subject, but it is very special. The composition, tonal quality, and movement are exceptional and evocative. The piece is true to it's title... breathtaking!

I have wanted this for my pro life bulletin board at my Catholic Church and I wasn’t disappointed. It is beautiful and it has so much meaning put in a picture. A picture speaks better then words and this picture says it all. Thanks

Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin 1870 – 1935, was a British artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and sketches of animals, sports, and rural life. Aldin executed village scenes and rural buildings in chalk, pencil and also wash sketching. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and a Master of Fox Hounds, many of his pictures illustrated hunting. Aldin's early influences included Randolph Caldecott and John Leech.

@ Caroline, thanks for that. It is from a book Old Inns and after a bit of research I am pretty sure it is Rye not Ryde. According to google maps the mermaid inn rye is still going strong! I have updated the title

This painting is actually of the Royal Anchor Hotel in Liphook, Hampshire, UK. I lived in Liphook and if you check modern photos of the Royal Anchor, you will see that it is this building. I live on the Isle of Wight and, as far as I know, there has never been an inn called The Mermaid at Ryde. There was one called The Mermaid at Freshwater Bay but it was much smaller than this building and was rebuilt and renamed as The Albion from 1830.
